Photo flashback

Near Grasmere, Northern England. . .
This photo was taken in late April of 1990 while I was on my first backpacking tour of Europe. I had started my three month trip in England, travelling up to the Lake District where, among other things, stone walls line the fields in every direction. It's amazing to see the walls climbing massive hills, and reaching down into valleys as far as the eye can see.
At night, when the mists move in, it's a spectacular place - especially on a full moon. It just happened I reached the area at the end of April. At that time, the mist and light from the moon combined to create an otherworldly atmosphere.
I had set up my tent in a hollow and, while exploring on the first night, got lost while wandering through the fields you see in the photo. The mist had moved in - and because one stone wall looked the same as another, I got confused and didn't make it back to my tent until sometime after midnight. It didn't help, I suppose, that I had quaffed a six-pack during my travels.
At the time I was living in St. John's, Newfoundland. It was my first trip overseas. It was a great experience, one I'd do over again in a heartbeat. I had brought over a few rolls of black and white film. I'm glad I did. In my minds eye, I add the colour every time I look at this and other pictures taken in the area.
I also remember how the weather was perfect there. At the same time in St. John's, a snow storm had shut down most of the city. I lucked out big time.
